Both of this year's significant works concerned with sleep medicine attest to the expanding fund of information about the basic science of sleep as well as the recognition, identification, and treatment of sleep disorders.

Principles and Practices of Sleep Medicine is marked by considerable expansion of the first edition, which was, in part, stimulated by comments of its readers. The second edition, which consists of 95 chapters subdivided into 16 sections, remains encyclopedic and comprehensive. Sleep Disorders Medicine, although shorter, is organized into 28 chapters and touches on virtually all of the topics discussed in the lengthier text.

The editors and contributors are all recognized for their areas of special interest. At least 12 authors contribute to both texts. William C. Dement, author of the first chapter in each work, provides a fine historical perspective on the evolution of sleep medicine and narcolepsy.
